I might consider a hybrid someday if the costs come down, but at this point I cannot see myself ever voluntarily buying a plug-in EV.

I remember well your story of driving through Nebraska in the winter in an electric car with the winter conditions were making for a heavy battery draw down imperiling everyone in the car.

Mandates are pretty much stupid and a screw-up. The biggest & baddest are mandates for wind & solar which really just force uneconomical energy sources down our throats. Typically mandates are determined by the corrupt and/or incompetent, and so they inevitably fail or cause more damage than they seek to repair.

For cars & trucks, various companies develop their own market niche and compete most favorably working with the tech they are most adept at. So simple truth, Tesla has the EV market cornered, Detroit just can't compete with them in that market and they were foolish to try. Toyota makes the best hybrids and Detroit does best with larger ICE vehicles and trucks.

Lots of people love their EVs and that's fine, they don't need subsidies or mandates. Let the free market decide winners & losers.

If it was proven that CO2 was really such a bad problem that we need to mitigate, then the rational approach would be to just put a revenue neutral carbon fee & dividend on fossil/biomass at source. And let the market decide what is the most efficient means to reduce emissions. No mandates, no subsidies, no biased exemptions.

Yes, it’s basically Commie for Government to force or coerce us to buy anything. But it’s still absurd to see wannabe Blue Collars driving F-150’s to office jobs, with sandbags in the bed all winter just because they can!

“Trad” carmakers could learn a lot from Tesla that applies even to their fuel cars; move from 12 volt to 48 volt electrical systems and save costs & copper while increasing oomph, and embrace Gigacasting for subframes.
