The trial of Derek Chauvin, the former officer charged in the death of George Floyd, is ongoing. He has been charged with second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. This post is not about the trial, it’s about what comes after the verdict is in. Last year, the riots in Minneapolis caused $500 mm of damage and many of the 1,500 businesses damaged will never reopen. Realistically, there is a high probability that whatever the outcome of the trial, riots and violence will result.
I ask, can you imagine if the $500 mm could have been used for to improve early education in poor school districts, provide counseling and support to promote nuclear families and parental investment, or expanding family planning and birth control options?
A society only works when a system of existing laws are enforced consistently. I have argued previously that January 6th never happens had it not been for the way the BLM riots over the summer were (not) handled. Today, our politicians and leaders must head this off beforehand and say in no uncertain terms that if any laws are broken, the maximum penalties will be imposed. That’s not racist, it’s necessary.
Or, we could go the other way and spend $$ on broken glass and paint stripper.

You know, if handled properly, broken glass can make a lovely decoupage and I say ‘bring in the stripper!’ But, on other hand, I do not know what would be wrong with enforcing our laws..we certainly have spent a large amount of money creating them!
