The decision we knew was coming after the leak from what is strongly believed to by Justice Sotomayor’s clerk, likely attempting to rally public anger to prevent the decision, was announced today. As I advocated for in January, cooler heads must prevail as legally, this should have been expected as the Roe v. Wade decision was shaky. Even RBG said as much.
Real leaders calm people down. They call for respect of the courts. And they arrest everyone who breaks the law using “the latest thing” as an excuse to riot.
Sadly, we live in a world where the same court that could legitimize something then can’t delegitimize it…. Because “white supremacy” or something. Regardless of your opinion on abortion, 81% of Americans believer there should be SOME limit. Mississippi’s law is 15 weeks. California allows you to abort in the delivery room. And many states with trigger laws have citizens that on mass, don’t believe in abortion. But as things stand, we have a system with a congress that should pass laws, senate that should approve them, a president who can veto and a Supreme Court that ensures things follow the constitution It’s about time our system starts to work again. Remember the OHSA mandate? The eviction moratorium? Airline mandates? Pass laws. Have those laws judged by our legal system. Repeat. It will be an interesting weekend. In the meantime, here’s a reprint of the post from January looking at all the legal begging the Dobbs vs Jackson case.
I give credit to President Biden, btw, for these comments. To be clear - when I say leaders - I mean everyone.
The president also said Roe v. Wade "was a correct decision" on a "complex matter through a careful balance between a woman’s right to choose."
"Let me be very clear and unambiguous: the only way we can secure a woman’s right to choose—the balance that existed—is for Congress to restore the protections of Roe v. Wade as federal law," Biden said. "No executive action from the president can do that."
