The real meaning of Diversity and Inclusion
I want to give a shout out to my employer, Hitachi Vantara. I may not be your typical “diversity and inclusion hire” but I’m going to argue that if a company is doing it right, that’s exactly what I am.
I’m outspoken. Hitachi has never requested I change my social media. They aren’t responsible for the content and they let me decide if it is a net positive or negative to my reputation. That alone is amazing.
I’m from oil and gas. We have sustainability targets as a company and it’s very important to our senior leaders and culture. We work together to identify opportunities rather than isolate solutions and problem solvers. Discussion always wins out over kicking peoples out of the room.
I’m left handed AND a ginger. I mean… mic drop, right? Can you imagine?
It’s nice to work with a company that allows each employee to be their best self. Gender, race, age, experience. These are all the obvious criteria, but if you really think about developing a diverse and inclusive team- attributes and personalities are probably the most important. I suggest other companies stop censoring and punishing differences and start realizing - that’s exactly what D&I is actually about.
