From 16-22 years old, squash was the most important part of my life. I traveled to Australia and New Zealand as a 16 year old to train for 6 weeks, live with a family, and play in the World Junior Championships. At 18, I went to Sheffield, London, Cairo and a host of North American Cities and represented Canada. At 22, I played in the Pan Am Games and the World Championships (in Cairo again ironically) this time leveraging my dual citizenship and representing the United States. I was blessed to see the world and have “a thing” to pour my heart and soul into before starting my engineering career in oil and gas. I learned dedication, work ethic, sportsmanship and built life long friendships. It’s a wonderful game and being back playing (albeit out of shape and old) has been a true highlight of 2023.
So fresh off the nostalgic return to US Squash Nationals last March, I wanted to give back to the sport and share the game with Denver. Partnering with the local Mile High 360 charity which has deep roots in the squash community and with Grizzly Bear Bourbon (a company I’m proud to have invested in), we will be host to some of the best squash players in the world.
The tournament will be held at the Denver Athletic Club Tuesday November 14 and Wednesday November 15 with 8 matches each day running from 430- 730 on 2 courts. For the quarter finals through the finals at the gala Saturday evening, the event will move to the Tivoli Center on the Auroria Campus downtown for a full glass court viewing experience. Except for Saturday, admission is free and proceeds from Saturday’s events go to the Mile High 360 charity which supports urban youth in Denver to level the playing field.
The number one seed of the tournament is world number 42 Cesar Salazar of Mexico and number 2 is America’s own, world 47 Faraz Khan. It should be a fantastic event and I hope to see you there!
